Environment

The Group was the primary communications strategist for the leading company in one of the major environmental restoration efforts of the 1990s.

Working with the client, the Group developed a market-based program for environmental cleanup. It then developed a negotiating position for the client, a position designed to balance the legitimate needs and preferences of all sides. It staged the launch of the proposal, ultimately sparking a five-way negotiation among federal, state and local officials, environmentalists and the industry. It assisted in determining the industry's negotiating strategy over the many months of talks, particularly with an eye to reinforcing the stature of the industry as a forthcoming negotiating partner and the perception of the industry's most severe critics as obstructionist.

The negotiating position that the Group developed was eventually embraced in legislation. This led some to challenge the by-then consensus program through the state initiative process. The Group chaired the campaign to defend it. It coordinated and, in many instances, provided content to one of the largest statewide television, radio and direct mail advertising and public speaking and door-to-door counter-initiative campaigns ever waged in the United States. Upon winning at the polls, the Group's plan had cleared hurdles at all levels of government, in both major political parties, in the state legislative, national and state executive branches, in the courts and in the public at large.
